As many families continue to explore alternatives to the smaller lot sizes and steep prices available in inner-city Ottawa, many are turning their sights on the Village of Richmond located just south of Kanata. This charming community offers everything you won't find north of the greenbelt: generous lots, spacious floor plans, affordable prices, and modern upscale homes by Cardel that are fully customizable.
Cardel President Greg Graham believes Richmond is "ideal for younger families with children who are looking for more yard space where the kids can play. And of course there's the mature population looking to get away from the city hustle and bustle and move to a village surrounding."
The Village of Richmond offers a rural small town experience that's within a reasonable distance of downtown Ottawa, and just ten minutes from Kanata. Says Graham, "the thing that sets Richmond apart from other communities south of Ottawa are the ease of access with good roads leading to Stittsville, Kanata, Barrhaven, Bells Corners and highway #416." Richmond is notable for its 65-foot wide lots, surrounding farmland, greenspace, several garden nurseries, and conservation areas that are protected from further development. (And whatever you do, don't miss the Richmond Bakery!) The Village itself supports a multi-use community centre and arena, soccer fields and a curling rink. Richmond is an outdoor enthusiasts haven, offering a place to walk, cycle, and ski on the Rideau Trail that cuts through the town and runs north to Ottawa and all the way south to Kingston.
Richmond boasts many beautiful historical buildings that have been well maintained, such as St. Philip's Church, the oldest church in the Catholic Archdiocese of Ottawa. St. Philip is also the name of the local Catholic elementary school while the Catholic secondary school is in the neighbouring town of Stittsville. The public Ottawa-Carleton District School Board offers Richmond Public School for elementary students and South Carleton High School for older students.
