It’s tempting to reach for soul satisfying dishes like braised pork belly, sausage, or creamy mac ’n’ cheese to take our minds off winter. Seductive, perhaps, but five of Ottawa’s top chefs will have decidedly more healthy — and no less satisfying — comforts in mind Sunday, when they’ll demonstrate tasty dishes that happen to be oh so- nutritious during the 13th Cancer Foundation Telethon from noon to 5 p.m. The telethon raises about $5 million each year to help fund various cancer projects that affect wait times, care, access to new treatment therapies and research. This year, cooking segments will be sprinkled throughout the afternoon telethon, which broadcasts
from St. Laurent Shopping Centre on A-Channel. The demonstrations, by five chefs, were taped at a dream kitchen installed by Deslaurier Kitchens in a Cardel model home in Kanata. Taste testers sampled each dish, invariably giving them an unreserved thumbs-up. We were delighted to drop by during the taping session with AChannel’s Angie Poirier and cameraman Ryan Lee. The five chefs — Duane Keates of Luxe Bistro, Geoffrey Morden at the Fairmont Château Laurier, Kenton Leier of the Delta (recently named executive chef at the Westin Ottawa), Michael Moffatt at Play and Beckta Fine Dining restaurants, and Nelson Borges of the Westin — are among 10 chefs who have volunteered to present fundraising dinners at private homes to raise money for cancer.
